Tyler (he/him) Jones is a 3rd year History and Foreign Affairs Major from Charlottesville, Virginia. Growing up in Charlottesville, community service has always been a passion of his leading to joining ASB the fall of his first year in 2019. Trip Logistics
We will leave from Charlottesville, VA on March 5th 2022 and return on March 13th 2022. We will be taking two cars, driven by the Site Leaders and will be staying in a house near the beach and the site we are working on. We will leave by 8am on Saturday the 5th (hopefully earlier), while stopping for lunch along the way. Throughout the week we will stay at Habitat housing in the area while commuting to Charleston and our site location, which could change during the duration of our service. We will leave Charleston by 12 on Sunday, hopefully earlier, returning to Charlottesville by 8 pm.
Participant Requirements
Although we will be building houses with Habitat for Humanity, don’t worry — no previous construction skills are required! Be prepared to get a little dirty and learn on the fly. Our shifts will start early and can be strenuous, but hard work pays off when it benefits a fantastic and deserving community like Hilton Head. And if that isn't enough to convince you, Hilton Head has a great food scene!
Service Activities
In Johns Island we will be working with Habitat for Humanity to build houses for the Johns Island community. We will be working with their year round volunteers and likely another ASB group from a different school.
Recreational Activities
The location of this trip gives us the opportunity to enjoy both the beach and activities in the city. We will be a short drive from the beach and will spend many afternoons there. When we are not at the beach we will be able to explore Charleston, SC. This includes going on a food tour of the city, seeing the local shops, and visiting iconic locations like rainbow road. To add to the full experience we will get to experience the southern soul food, a staple of the community.
Community/Area Background
Johns Island, SC is an island south of Charleston, SC and is the largest in SC. It is home to many beaches and lots of traditional southern culture. It is also located near where the show Outer Banks was filmed! With it being just 30 minutes outside of Charleston, and the increase in tourism, the area has become a desirable beach location, skyrocketing housing prices. This leaving families who have been there for generations without affordable housing. We will be serving the community by creating houses that they will be able to afford and allow them to stay in their community.
